Beautiful Sunday

"Sunday morning, up with the lark
I think I'll take a walk in the park
Hey, hey, hey, it's a beautiful day"

That was how I felt today when I woke up to a bright sunny morning. The weather was fantastic and I just wanted to get out and do something. I found myself humming to this infectious ditty from the 70's. I don't know about you but it sure did bring back some good old memories for me.

I started the day with a slow routine at the gym. I didn't want to do anything strenuous as I had planned to do a bit of photo shooting, with my iPhone of course, and I didn't want to get myself tired out so soon.

Raffles Place was my first stop as that was where my gym was located. I have shot this place many times before but I still find it interesting.

One of my favourite application on my iPhone is CameraBag. It is an image processor that simulate some camera styles that add an interesting effect to your photograph.  It is really cool.

In my last post, I mentioned that I saw some workers doing preparation work for the Dragon Boat race at the Singapore river. It was really lucky that I was able to catch the actual event today.

This fountain is located in front of Victoria Concert Hall. I don't think we have a lot of fountain in Singapore. I think this one is quite an old one.

These three torso-less Buddha statues caught my attention with their unique styles from different parts of Indo China.

The pathway leading to Victoria Concert Hall. I love the greenery surrounding the building.

CameraBag allows you to try out different filters to create old school photographic styles.

I think we are in the middle. Not here not there, most of the time.

I spent the day walking around the civic district. The buildings and the abundant greenery cast a very special feeling on me as I explored its colonial heritage.

A Night By The Waterfront

This evening I had dinner with my good friend Eugene in Chinatown. I had a plate of pork ribs hor fun cooked with black soya bean. There was literally just pork ribs on top of stir fried hor fun and some brown gravy poured over it. And nothing else. I have never eaten this type of hor fun before. This dish just didn't do it for me. I still prefer my hor fun cooked in the way I grew up with; thick gravy with lots of ingredients. Later, we found out that the chef is from China. I guess they do it differently over there.

After dinner, we took a walk to Clarke Quay. I have heard that the authority has installed colourful lighting on the bridges during the F1 event. I felt the place has a carnival atmosphere to it. I was really captivated by the colourful lighting and soon I was happily snapping pictures with my iPhone.

From there we crossed over to Boat Quay, where we saw some workers making preparation for an event. It looked like there is going to be a dragon boat race on the river tomorrow.

As we walked along Singapore River, we saw some dragon boats docked by the bank of the river. The magnificent view of the city skyline rising above the bridge was simply magical.

Finally, we reached the Esplanade. We were very fortunate to come at the right time. Tonight, there was a free concert going on at the outdoor theatre. We decided to sit down to enjoy the music. The new outdoor theatre is bigger than before and the sound system is superb.

The two female singers, dressed in outrageous costume, were belting out songs in Mandarin, Hokkien, and Teochew. It felt a bit weird but we enjoyed the performance nonetheless.

The audience were mostly older folks and later we realised that it was a concert organised by the CC to celebrate Senior Citizen Week. We felt like we were attending a getai concert in the heartland.

This is Eugene, a professional media photographer. We have been friends for many years. He is the founder of Singapore Sights, a travel portal which has won an international award recently. An avid traveller, he maintains a very interesting blog on his travel encounters in Thailand. Do drop by his blog if you are interested to visit Thailand.

A Point of View

The company where I work is located on the sixth floor of a seven storey building. The production department and store are located on the seventh floor. So it is very often that I am running up and down, using the exit staircase to get there. Walking along the corridor leading to the production department, I get a good view of the building and its surrounding.
